MKJB gets new four-storey building

The school was renamed to Jefri Bolkiah Engineering School in 1984, and it was in 1987 when the school attained its college status and renamed itself MKJB.

JEFRI Bolkiah Engineering College (MKJB) yesterday celebrated its 40th anniversary yesterday with a series of activities and ceremonies, including the foundation laying of the college's new four-storey building.

The college first began operations with the name Government Technical School, running the City and Guilds Certificate (CGC) courses in Basic Engineering.

At that point in time, the school was already offering the Brunei Darussalam Technical and Vocational Education Certificates (BDTVEC), instead of the CGC.

Present as guest of honour for the anniversary celebration was Minister of Education Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Kerna Dato Seri Setia Dr Hj Abu Bakar Hj Apong, who laid the foundation for the college's new building, apart from participating in the activities.

According to the minister, the Brunei Technical and Vocational Education Council was a significant moment in the development of technical education in the history of the Sultanate, and ended Brunei's dependence on trade and the field technician certification from abroad.

The minister also stressed that the objectives of SPN21 is aligned with the rapid global economic growth, and the ministry expects a demand in employing technical and vocational school graduates to increase due to better economic activity.

Apart from a new building, the school also celebrated its achievement of attaining the International Quality Management System Standard Certification ISO 9001:2008 as a provider of professional engineering education and qualification.

The college is currently the second largest technical institution in the Sultanate, and is the only engineering college in the district. — Chua Guan CheongThe Brunei Times

MKJB students get RBN certificates

THE Royal Brunei Navy (RBN) awarded certificates of attendance to 23 Jefri Bolkiah Engineering College (MKJB) Marine Engineering students yesterday morning for successfully completing the "Damage Control and Leadership" course.

The four-day course included theory and practical sessions, and covers practice on basic fire fighting, use of fire fighting equipment, as well as doing practical damage control exercises using wedges to stem ingress of water as well as removal of water.

The team building and leadership tasks were designed to get the students working as a team and to improve their confidence in testing environments under pressure from both staff and peers.

Hj Md Sharifuddin Hj Md Salleh, Principal of MKJB, was on hand to present the certificates to the students.

During his welcoming speech, the principal hailed the relationship between MKJB and RBN, which he said dated back to 1985 when MKJB first started its Marine Engineering Certificate courses, whereby RBN helped to facilitate by providing assessors to assess the Marine's Final Year students' project.

MKJB holds graduation night

TRUE to the motto "Transforming MKJB into a centre of excellence in engineering to meet challenges of the 21st century" Jefri Bolkiah College of Engineering recently saw over 140 students graduate the 2006-2008 intake with excellence.

This was noted by the chairperson of graduation night Hjh Salenawati Hj Md Saji yesterday evening during the MKJB Graduation night which was held at the Holiday Lodge Hotel to show the school's appreciation for the efforts put up by the students throughout the years.

According to Hjh Salenawati the students have done so much to raise the name of the school that this year one of the students was recognised by the Institute of Engineering and Technology.

Among the excellent students who were awarded last night were Yong Tham Fook from the National Diploma Course in Electrical and Electronics Engineering course, Mohd Adib for his efforts in CIPTA 2009 and several other students for their involvement in Inforama 2008.

The ceremony yesterday was attended by the Acting Principal of MKJB Alias Hj Abu Bakar together with other senior staff and instructors from the school.

The ceremony also congratulated the efforts of students who were chosen as among the best throughout the year both academically and personally.

BSP donates teaching equipment to MKJB

BRUNEI Shell Petroleum's (BSP) continuous efforts to support the government's initiative to enhance human resource development yesterday saw the company donating several units of teaching equipment to the Jefri Bolkiah Engineering School (MKJB) in Kuala Belait.

Present to receive the contribution on behalf of the school was the Director of Technical Education, Pg Suhaimi Pg Hj Bakar as well as senior officials from the Department of Technical Education, principals, teachers and representatives from BSP. Head Learning and Development (HLD) at BSP, Jim Carthy said that the company has worked closely with the government in its bid to support and strengthen local capability.

He said, "On one hand, HLD has supported the development of the local Bruneian community by way of advice, teaching staff familiarisation visits and donation of equipment that will enhance the learning process. On the other, MKJB has developed young Bruneian talent who are able to apply to BSP for key jobs that play a part in securing the future of Brunei's oil and gas industry."

The head of HLD handed the equipment to Cikgu Alias Hj Abu Bakar, acting principal of MKJB, which amounted to $150,000 worth of teaching equipment to the school, including a HP113 compact centrifugal pump test set, an engine test set bed and a multi-turbine test set for its plant engineering section.

Six students were also presented with certificates for their involvement in a Skills Development Programme together with two students who were awarded certificates for completing the CSWIP 3.0 Visual Welding Inspector Level 1 course.

The ceremony was followed by a tour of the plant engineering workshop where visitors saw firsthand the learning environment that prepares MKJB students for their future careers in the technical disciplines.

Cikgu Alias said that BSP and MKJB has a long-standing relationship where the college "trained most of Brunei Shell's employees through engineering courses".

He also said such courses had "certainly provided many benefits in producing more local workforce with skills, quality and dedication in supporting the nation's hopes and aspirations".
